The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015 was enacted in December 2015 and governs the law in relation to vulnerable adults who are experiencing difficulties with decision making.

This reforming piece of legislation repeals the outdated Wards of Court System and implements a modern framework of supported decision-making that allows for people to plan ahead for the possibility of mental incapacity. In repealing the Wards of Court system, the act provides for a rights-based intervention mechanism that is scaled depending on the decision-making ability of the relevant person. The Act seeks to enable persons to make their own decisions in line with their constitutional right of autonomy.
